Sunshine, Springs & Manatees: A Different Kind of Florida Escape Awaits on Florida’s Nature Coast https://www.pittsburghmagazine.com/discover-crystal-river-florida/ Mon, 12 Jan 2026 16:57:31 +0000 https://www.pittsburghmagazine.com/?p=350757

Inverness Drone Shot

You’re already thinking about getting away. Now imagine a Florida destination where winter and early spring are defined by sunshine, mild temperatures, and days spent outdoors in some of the state’s most beautiful natural settings.

Welcome to Florida’s Nature Coast, home to the charming communities of Crystal River, Homosassa, Inverness, and Floral City. Together, they offer a refreshing alternative to the typical Florida getaway, one rooted in crystal-clear springs, wildlife encounters, and small-town coastal character.

Carol Grant

At the heart of the region is Crystal River, widely known as the Manatee Capital of the World. Winter and early spring are ideal times to visit, when hundreds of West Indian manatees gather in the area’s spring-fed waterways, drawn by water that stays a constant 72 degrees year-round. It’s one of the best places in the U.S. to safely interact with manatees in the wild, with guided eco tours led by operators who emphasize conservation, respectful interaction, and passive observation.Wetsuits and gear are provided, making it an approachable and unforgettable experience.

Manatee Discover Crystal River

There are also plenty of ways to enjoy manatees without getting wet. Visitors can spot them from the boardwalks at Three Sisters Springs, glide past them while kayaking on Kings Bay or the Homosassa River, or watch from the underwater observatory at Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park.

Beyond manatees, the Nature Coast delivers a full lineup of winter-to-spring experiences. Paddle through spring-fed rivers, hike or bike shaded trails, explore historic downtowns in Inverness and Floral City, or enjoy fresh seafood and waterfront sunsets in Old Homosassa. The pace is relaxed, the scenery feels untouched, and the experiences are easy to combine into one memorable trip.

Getting there is simple. Travelers can fly non-stop from Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) to Tampa or Orlando, followed by a scenic drive north to the Nature Coast. Once there, you’ll find a range of lodging options, from waterfront resorts and boutique properties to trusted hotel brands, all close to the area’s top outdoor experiences.

If your idea of a Florida escape includes sunshine, warm water, and experiences that feel genuinely different, Florida’s Nature Coast delivers all winter long.

Start planning your getaway at DiscoverCrystalRiverFL.com and discover a naturally unforgettable side of Florida.

Get up close to these beautiful bird parents as you learn about the dynamic world of nesting: from the ground-dwelling Eurasian Eagle-Owl duo X and Dumbledore, to the intricate weave work of Crested Oropendolas, and even the haphazard layering of sticks and leaves of the Victoria Crowned Pigeon pair Isabelle and Ferdinand.

During NEW seasonal Daily Activities such as Nurturing Nesters: Expert Feeding, included with General Admission, guests will learn how species custom-build unique nests for their feathered families. Birds aren’t the only nest-builders, as guests will discover during Not Just Bird Eggs: Expert Talk, featuring a rotating Animal Ambassador.

Winter Wellness in Berkeley Springs: A Season of Renewal https://www.pittsburghmagazine.com/berkeley-springs-winter-wellness/ Wed, 26 Nov 2025 14:47:07 +0000 https://www.pittsburghmagazine.com/?p=347882

Berekley Springs Spa Robes

Winter has a way of inviting us inward—to rest, to restore, and to reconnect with ourselves. In Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, that gentle invitation becomes something deeper. Wrapped in the quiet beauty of the Appalachian Mountains, this small spa town transforms the coldest months into a season of healing.

There, wellness isn’t a trend—it’s a tradition. For centuries, travelers have journeyed to Berkeley Springs to immerse themselves in the warm, mineral-rich waters that bubble up from the heart of the mountain. In winter, when steam rises into the crisp air and your breath slows to match the stillness around you, the experience feels almost timeless. Whether you choose a private Roman bath at Berkeley Springs State Park or a rejuvenating spa treatment with Frankie Tan at the famous Atasia Spa.

Every January, wellness seekers from across the nation flock to The Historic Country Inn to participate in the Winter Wellness Festival which features demonstrations, speakers, and free spa treatments focused around wellness and holistic healing.

For those seeking fresh air, nearby trails and overlooks offer peaceful moments with nature. The panoramic view from Prospect Peak feels especially profound in winter, when the world below seems hushed and simplified. It’s a reminder that even in the dormant season, beauty thrives.

Winter in Berkeley Springs isn’t about rushing or doing more. It’s about giving yourself permission to pause. To breathe. To heal. Whether you come for the soothing waters, the quiet landscapes, or simply a break from the weight of everyday life, Berkeley Springs offers a sanctuary where wellness feels natural—and renewal feels inevitable.

Martoranos Prime 1

As with every holiday season, many of us are dreaming of a bountiful Thanksgiving, a white Christmas, a decidedly Happy Hanukkah and memorable New Year. Perhaps even more of us are dreaming of a pristine kitchen in which the fervor of holiday meal prep and corresponding cleanup is someone else’s chore.

Thankfully, Rivers has you covered all season long with holiday menus that let you skip the stress and focus on what’s really important—flavors, friends, family and fun.

Gobble Up the Good Times

While full details of our exclusive menu offerings will be revealed closer to each holiday, guests can bet on a blend of traditional feasts with seasonal favorites.

For Thanksgiving, Martorano’s Prime will continue its beloved tradition of serving roasted turkey with both dark and white meat, paired with its signature herbed gravy.

Traditional sides, such as potatoes and cranberry sauce, as well as festive desserts will round out the Turkey Day delights at both Martorano’s Prime and Wheelhouse Bar & Grill, bringing all the comfort of a home-cooked holiday meal straight to your table.

Martoranos Prime 2

A December to Dine For

Holiday menus will bring their own inspired selections, crafted from fresh ingredients and the culinary finesse of Rivers Casino’s talented chefs.

Whether you’re planning a cozy family dinner or a lively group celebration, Rivers’ two busiest restaurants, Martorano’s and Wheelhouse, will both serve up something special for every occasion.

Get It While It’s Hot: Mian Debuts Two New Dishes

Mian, Rivers’ go-to spot for Asian-inspired cuisine, is also turning up the heat for the holidays, unveiling two sizzling-hot recent additions to its regular menu.

Casino guests can spice things up with the Spicy Szechuan Pepper Chicken, featuring tempura chicken thigh, sweet chili sauce, bamboo shoots, and crispy fried onions.

Or indulge in the rich and savory Roasted Duck Breast With Mixed Vegetables, a 10-ounce slow-roasted duck breast glazed with a spicy barbecue sauce and served alongside seasonal vegetables.

Both dishes promise all-new bold flavors that you won’t want to miss.

Reserve Your Table Now!

For the most up-to-date holiday menus, please visit RiversCasino.com/Pittsburgh/Dining. Each restaurant’s individual page will post updates and limited-time holiday menus as they’re announced.

Reservations are encouraged for Martorano’s Prime, the award-winning Italian-American steakhouse and Diners’ Choice Award recipient. Guests can book directly at OpenTable.com.

Ronald McDonald House Charities Helps Families Stay Together https://www.pittsburghmagazine.com/ronald-mcdonald-house-charities/ Wed, 12 Nov 2025 14:52:15 +0000 https://www.pittsburghmagazine.com/?p=346150

1 1

In life’s most difficult moments, hope shines brightest when we come together. Your generosity today is more than a gift—it’s a powerful promise that no child or family will face their medical journey alone. With your support, families are given more than just a place to stay—they’re given comfort, care, and the strength to face tomorrow.

For more than 45 years, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Pittsburgh and Morgantown has been a place where families can stay together, lending support during difficult moments. With two Houses, one in Pittsburgh with 74 apartments and one in Morgantown with 27 guest rooms, we can care for 101 families every single night. In addition, the Ronald McDonald Care Mobile visits local communities to provide medical care to children at no cost to the families. Seeing over 1,000 children annually, the Care Mobile is a vital asset in keeping children healthy.

3 1

For families like Charlie’s, Ronald McDonald House meant being together and creating moments of normal during a time that was anything but. During their stay, they formed bonds with other families, rooted in the common experience of being away from home with a sick child. They explored the city, visited local attractions and celebrated milestones with their older son.

The Charity thrives on engagement from the community; a community that’s generous on many levels. From volunteers coming in to provide nourishing, homemade meals to school groups who host fundraisers on our behalf to organizations and individuals who support various campaigns; we’re fortunate to have strong support that allows our mission to thrive.

10 1

“We are blessed to provide families with the daily essentials they need during their stay, easing some of the stress and allowing them to focus only on their child,” said Eleanor Reigel, CEO of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Pittsburgh and Morgantown.

If you would like to learn more about the many ways to get involved, especially during the holiday season, please visit: 2025 Holiday Volunteering | Ronald McDonald House Charities of Pittsburgh and Morgantown.

As November arrives and the nation honors its veterans, we, at GBU Life and the GBU Foundation, proudly highlight one of our 2024 Community Grant Award recipients — Veterans Parsonage. Awarded a $5,000 grant under GBU Life’s Hometown Hero Support pillar, Veterans Parsonage provides a place of refuge and renewal for those who once wore the uniform.

GBU Life’s Commitment to Community

Donald Baker Of The Veterans Parsonage With Connor Heyward 2

At GBU Life, our mission goes beyond life insurance and financial protection. As a member-owned fraternal benefit society, we give back to the communities where our members live, work and serve. Through the GBU Foundation’s Community Grant Awards, we support nonprofits that embody service, compassion and connection.

Each year, the Foundation awards grants across four pillars—Wellness, Education, Charitable Giving and Hometown Hero Support. In 2024, Veterans Parsonage was one of 13 organizations to receive funding, earning $5,000 for its dedication to helping veterans achieve stability and belonging after service.

The grant helped Veterans Parsonage enhance programs that guide veterans toward independent living. Funding supported maintaining safe housing, assisting with utilities and repairs and expanding outreach and counseling initiatives that promote well-being. These efforts reflect the goals of GBU Life’s Hometown Hero Support pillar, amplifying the work of organizations making tangible differences in people’s lives.

A Veterans Day Reflection

Gbu Foundation Hometown Hero Support

As Veterans Day approaches, we celebrate nonprofits like Veterans Parsonage, whose compassion embodies the values GBU Life was founded on. Across the country, veterans still face barriers—housing insecurity, health challenges or isolation. Veterans Parsonage meets those needs with understanding and action, creating not only shelter but community. Through the GBU Foundation support, their mission continues to thrive.

On Veterans Day and every day, GBU Life salutes those who served. Through our Hometown Heroes initiative, members have donated more than $207,000 to military and frontline organizations in the first half of 2025, reflecting our deep gratitude.

Be Part of the Impact

Inspired by Veterans Parsonage? As part of GBU Life’s Season of Giving campaign, members and donors can nominate nonprofits for the next Community Grant Awards—four $10,000 grants are available. Visit gbu.org/foundation to learn more.

GBU Life is the marketing name for GBU Financial Life, Pittsburgh, PA. Life insurance is underwritten by GBU Life. While GBU Life supports the mission and impact of Veterans Parsonage, we are not directly affiliated with the organization. GBU Life is also not affiliated with Pittsburgh Magazine.

The Hallmark Movie Town of Berkeley Springs, WV https://www.pittsburghmagazine.com/berkeley-springs-west-virginia/ Wed, 22 Oct 2025 14:43:40 +0000 https://www.pittsburghmagazine.com/?p=343764

Berkeley Springs Couple

When snow dusts the ridges and holiday lights appear, Berkeley Springs transforms into a quietly enchanting retreat for winter lovers. Imagine crisp air scented with evergreen, hands clasped in gloves, and historic streets glowing as dusk falls. In this intimate season, the town pulses with a softer beat—one meant for two.

In mid-December, the town’s warmth deepens with the Bath Christmas Market, held December 12-14. For those two festive evenings, Fairfax Street becomes a European-style holiday bazaar: rows of tents filled with artisan gifts, local foods, and seasonal crafts. Carolers stroll between booths, a sleigh carrying Santa and Mrs. Claus glides into sight, and an ice-skating rink invites playful twirls in front of twinkling storefronts. It’s the kind of scene you’d expect in a Hallmark Christmas movie—and in fact, the famous Berkeley Springs Gazebo is just that.

Default

Winter in Berkeley Springs is not about sweeping gestures—it’s about shared quiet: slipping into warm mineral baths, lingering over candlelit dinners, and walking home under lampposts wreathed in garlands. The springs, historically revered by Indigenous peoples and early settlers alike, continue to be a source of soothing warmth. The town’s small shops and galleries offer intimate distractions, perfect for post-market wanderings or morning coffees as daylight pours through frost-laced windows.

Berkeley Springs Spa

A winter weekend here becomes a delicate dance between stillness and delight: the hush of snowfall, the glow of holiday lights, the scent of pine and simmering cider. In a town that looks lifted from a storybook, romance here feels less like a retreat and more like finding home—in each other, and in a place quietly steeped in memory and hope.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month: Meeting the Moment with Hope https://www.pittsburghmagazine.com/domestic-violence-awareness-month-wcs/ Mon, 20 Oct 2025 19:19:59 +0000 https://www.pittsburghmagazine.com/?p=343613

Purple Thursday 2025

The landscape of domestic violence is complex and constantly shifting. What survivors need today is not what they needed five, ten, or twenty years ago. Communities evolve. Systems change. Crises emerge unexpectedly. And through it all, Women’s Center & Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh (WC&S) has remained steadfast—responsive, flexible, and innovative.

Every October, Domestic Violence Awareness Month reminds us that the work of supporting survivors is never static. It is ongoing, urgent, and shaped by the challenges of our time. For WC&S, this has meant more than 50 years of meeting the moment: adapting services, expanding resources, and finding new ways to ensure that safety, healing, and dignity are always within reach for survivors and their children.

01

The COVID-19 pandemic reinforced a guiding philosophy for WC&S: “Keep Calm and Keep Serving.” Those words became more than a rallying cry; they became a way of working. Today, that same resilience continues to inform how services are delivered, how strategies evolve, and how survivors are supported—not just during moments of crisis, but every day.

Domestic violence work has always been rooted in strength and community. It is about banding together, overcoming hardship, and creating pathways toward stability and hope. During DVAM, WC&S reflects on these roots while also looking ahead, recommitting to its mission of supporting every survivor, wherever they are in their journey.

02

Each journey is unique, like the flight path of a paper airplane. It begins with a single decision, a moment of courage, and the need for a safe place to land. With the right guidance and resources, that path forward can lift into something greater: healing, empowerment, and the freedom to thrive.

Behind every counseling session, legal advocacy effort, emergency shelter stay, or supportive phone call is a team dedicated to ensuring no survivor is left without options. Advocates, counselors, administrators, our Board of Directors, and volunteers share one unwavering purpose: to provide safety, compassion, and possibility during times of profound uncertainty.

As DVAM shines a spotlight on the realities of domestic violence, WC&S stands as a reminder that even in uncertain times, there is strength in adaptability and resilience. Survivors will always find a trusted partner here—an organization prepared to evolve, endure, and light the way forward.

Heat Pumps Made Easy: How Pittsburgh Homeowners Can Save Money, Energy and Time https://www.pittsburghmagazine.com/duquesne-light-company-home-concierge/ Fri, 26 Sep 2025 15:38:46 +0000 https://www.pittsburghmagazine.com/?p=341819

Dlc Home Concierge Article Image 1000x667

Upgrading your home’s heating and cooling system can feel daunting – especially when you’re trying to balance comfort, cost, and sustainability. Did you know heat pumps support all three? It’s why you’ll find two hybrid heat pumps in Pittsburgh Magazine’s next Ultimate House, alongside other modern, high-performance features.

The new Home Concierge service from Duquesne Light Company (DLC) is designed to bring that same level of comfort and energy-savings into your home, hassle-free. After taking a simple, online assessment, this free service connects you with instant quotes, vetted contractors, and available rebates, tailored to your home’s unique needs. In other words, DLC will do the shopping for you.

Why Heat Pumps Are Worth Considering

Heat pumps are one of the most efficient ways to heat and cool your home. Unlike traditional systems, they transfer heat rather than generate it, making them ideal for Pittsburgh’s seasonal swings. This feature also supports:

  • Comfort year-round – warm in winter, cool in summer.
  • Lower energy bills – thanks to high efficiency.
  • Smaller carbon footprint – good for your wallet and the planet.

“Heat pumps offer a more efficient and cleaner solution for year-round home comfort,” said Clint Noack, new products and services developer at DLC. “They’re a practical, modern upgrade that can also help save on energy bills.”

And with hybrid systems, also known as dual-fuel like the one featured in the Ultimate House, you don’t have to give up your furnace to make the switch. It’s about flexibility and finding the right fit for your home.

Skip the Shopping, with Home Concierge

DLC’s Home Concierge service, in partnership with Pearl Edison, takes the guesswork out of upgrading to a heat pump. It also saves homeowners time usually spent finding trusted contractors and comparing quotes. Here’s how:

  1. Personalized recommendations based on your home’s layout and energy use.
  2. Upfront cost estimates and energy savings projections.
  3. Access to vetted contractors and quality assurance.
  4. Help finding rebates to lower your costs.

“As an electric utility, it was a natural fit for us to launch the Home Concierge because we understand that home energy projects, especially with new technologies like heat pumps, can seem overwhelming,” said Noack. “We even provide training to local installers so our customers can feel confident in both the product and the end result.”

Expert Help in a Changing Energy Landscape

Heating and cooling are the top contributors to a homeowner’s energy bill, and therefore the biggest opportunities for saving money. That’s why choosing the right system can make a lasting impact, especially when those Pittsburgh heat waves return. Whether you’re ready to upgrade or just starting to think about it, DLC can help you make informed, future-ready decisions.

Visit DLC’s Home Concierge to learn more or get started.
