“People who love to eat are always the best people,” Julia Child once said. Pittsburgh has long taken that sentiment seriously, cultivating a community of food makers who value flavor and craft.

The region’s small-batch makers also rise to the occasion with sauces, salts, chocolates, spirits and snacks that make holiday gifting feel both easy and thoughtful. From widely loved pickles and punchy spice blends to beautifully packaged chocolates and locally distilled rum, each one delivers big flavor with a strong sense of place.

If you are shopping local, or just shopping last-minute, these Pittsburgh-made picks offer a simple, delicious way to give your loved ones a gift that will actually be enjoyed.

Artie’s Hot Sauce

Pittsburgh native Arthur “Artie” Pitt brings the same creative energy that once fueled an indie music career to this small-batch hot sauce line, now a favorite among local heat seekers.

Standouts include Pizza Shop, a tangy banana-pepper ode to neighborhood slice joints; Fiery Jerk, built on Scotch bonnet heat; Lemon Fire, bright and citrusy; Arbol Insanity, smoky and chile-forward; and Honey Sting, a sweet-heat sauce that somehow works on everything from chicken to roasted vegetables. It is an easy gift for the friend who puts hot sauce on absolutely everything.

Where to buy: Order directly on the Artie’s Hot Sauce website, with local delivery available in the Pittsburgh area. Bottles also pop up at select restaurants, shops and markets around the city, depending on the season.

Pittsburgh Popcorn Company

This is popcorn that understands the assignment. Pittsburgh Popcorn Company’s popcorn is freshly popped all day, ridiculously snackable and sold in fun flavors such as Candy Cane Gingerbread and Spicy Bacon Cheddar. Whether you are shipping a tin to friends out of state or grabbing a few flavored bags as stocking stuffers, Pittsburgh Popcorn Company delivers fresh, generously portioned popcorn in flavors that please everyone.

Where to buy: Available at several local Pittsburgh Popcorn Company shops, including the Strip District, Oakland, Ross Park Mall, Monroeville Mall and Bethel Park. Order tins and gift packs online on the Pittsburgh Popcorn Company website.

Salt Medley 2 1

PHOTO COURTESY STEEL CITY SALT CO.

Steel City Salt Co.

Founded by Pittsburgh native John Tarallo, Steel City Salt Co. has grown from a humble folding table in the Strip District into a Millvale staple known for some of the city’s most inventive small-batch seasonings. Inspired by his Sicilian grandfather’s pantry and a childhood spent around Italian cooks, Tarallo now hand-blends more than 100 salts with his wife, Candy, that are each designed to transform a dish with just a pinch.

Highlights include the flagship Black & Gold Blend with activated charcoal, garlic and sea salt; the garlicky Pierogi Salt; smoky favorites Hickory Smoked Sea Salt; citrus-forward blends; Jordanian-inspired za’atar salts and chile-driven options infused with ghost pepper, habanero or sriracha.

Whether your recipient cooks every night, or just loves a good finishing flourish, these salts reward a light hand and elevate even the simplest meals.

Where to buy: Shop the full lineup at Salt HQ (206 Grant Ave., Millvale) or order online at the Steel City Salt Co. website. Seasonal Strip District setups may also be available.

The Chocolate Moose

A Squirrel Hill staple for anyone with a serious sweet tooth, The Chocolate Moose offers classic truffles, artisan chocolate bars and beautifully packaged gift boxes. From 32-piece truffle assortments to mint lentils, chocolate-covered pretzels and seasonal specials, the shop’s offerings are cozy, local and gift-ready. This is the kind of chocolate you are happy to give and even happier to eat.

Where to buy: In person at the shop’s location at 5830 Forbes Ave., Squirrel Hill. The shop does not currently offer online ordering, so stopping by is the best way to shop.

Oakmont Olive Oil Company

A bottle of oil or vinegar might sound simple, but the offerings from Oakmont Olive Oil Company bring real personality to the kitchen. The olive oils range from bright citrus and herbal infusions to smoky and spicy profiles, while their balsamic vinegars include fruit-forward and aged varieties.

A standout is the Dark Chocolate Balsamic Vinegar, a glossy, truffle-like pour that tastes rich and decadent without being cloying. Drizzle it over strawberries or vanilla ice cream, splash it into a cocktail or serve it with hunks of crusty baguette.

Where to buy: Visit the shop at 640 Allegheny River Blvd., Oakmont or call 412-689-1358 to place an order. Online ordering is limited, so in-store pickup is recommended.

Pittsburgh Pickle Co.

Based just outside the city in Verona, this family-run maker produces bold, crunchy pickles with a strong local point of view. The lineup ranges from the salty-sweet Pittsburgh Style to spicy Brimstone, classic Original Dill and deli-leaning We The Pickle.

Widely available around the city, and easy to grab at the last minute, a single jar or a three-pack makes a fun, briny gift that pairs perfectly with sandwiches, cocktails or a charcuterie board.

Where to buy: Available online at Pittsburgh Pickle Co’s website and at grocery and specialty stores throughout the region.

Lpetrilla Maggiesfarm 5886

MAGGIE’S FARM RUM | PHOTO BY LAURA PETRILLA

Maggie’s Farm Rum

Maggie’s Farm Rum was founded by Tim Russell, who recognized an opportunity in Pennsylvania’s spirits scene after craft distilling was legalized in 2011. In 2013, he opened Maggie’s Farm in the Strip District, producing the state’s first commercially available craft rum since Prohibition.

Today, the distillery has built a national reputation for rum with real depth, fermented from raw cane sugar and distilled in small batches. The lineup covers a lot of ground, from a clean, elegant White Rum that shines in daiquiris to a richer Dark Rum with warmth and body. There is also a cult-favorite Pineapple Rum that brings just enough tropical brightness to winter cocktails, along with a Coffee Liqueur made with locally roasted cold brew that’s perfect for after-dinner drinks.

Where to buy: Purchase bottles at the Strip District Barrelhouse (3212A Smallman St.) or at the South Hills distillery location. Select products are also available through the Maggie’s Farm Rum website and Pennsylvania Fine Wine & Good Spirits stores.

PHOTO: VISIT ERIE

If you’re looking for a beach vacation without making the 6-hour-plus drive to the ocean, Erie is your best bet — and there’s plenty of stuff to do there.

For example, Presque Isle State Park has numerous beaches with kid-friendly amenities, while the state of Pennsylvania offers free public tours of Presque Isle State Park’s bays and interior ponds. There also are a number of wineries around the area, plus a popular 13.5-mile scenic pedestrian/bike trail around the perimeter of Presque Isle.

Unlike Pittsburgh, Erie is home to some winning pirates. Scallywags, located at Dobbins Landing on Presque Isle Bay, runs tours for guests of all ages and there’s also the evening Wobbly Pirate cruises for guests 21 and over.

Erie’s beaches aren’t the only water play in town. Water World, located within the Waldameer Park amusement park, has a plethora of water slides, and guests may also move in between the water park and the amusement park. For rainy or cold days, Splash Lagoon Indoor Water Park on Peach Street is a tropical oasis for kids and adults alike.

Of course, you’ll also need a place to stay on your beach-but-not-the ocean trip. Here are six of our favorite places for a weekend getaway.

HOCKING HILLS PHOTO BY HUCK BEARD

My fifth-grade daughter and her friends will say “skibidi Ohio” (among other nonsense words) when something isn’t cool, but I’m here to tell you that our neighboring state of Ohio actually is very cool, or — as the kids would say — it has rizz.

From the natural wonders of Hocking Hills and Cuyahoga Falls to entertainment destinations such as the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Cedar Point, the Buckeye State is full of amazing things to see and do. Here’s where to go — and where to stay — all within a three-hour drive of Pittsburgh.

Skiing

PHOTO: ADOBE STOCK

After years of seemingly warm-ish Decembers, the snow has arrived pre-Christmas in the greater Pittsburgh region this year.

The freezing temperatures, plus the recent flakes, have me thinking about ski season, or rather, it’s gotten my husband thinking about it. While he’s an avid skier himself, our elementary school-age daughters (who are now fearless after several years of skiing) are following right in his footsteps, er, um, snowtracks.

To keep up with the rest of the family, I reluctantly learned how to ski a few years ago, although I still enjoy the “apres” part of the experience the most.

We’ll definitely be taking a few weekend ski getaways this winter. If you’re planning to do the same, here are some of the best places, from condo-style amenities to a luxury chalet, for an overnight winter stay — all within a 3-hour drive of Pittsburgh.

For Ski Beginners

Hidden Valley

Vrbo11

Take it from someone who knows, Hidden Valley Resort in the Laurel Highlands — which, along with fellow nearby ski destinations Seven Springs and Laurel Mountains, is owned by Vail Resorts — has some of the most beginner-friendly slopes around. This spacious four-bedroom cabin, which sleeps up to 12 guests, has a ski-in/ski-out location to one of the resort’s beginner slopes. Other amenities include two living rooms with gas fireplaces, a dart board and an outdoor firepit. In the warmer weather, the cabin is only a few minutes drive from the resort’s outdoor pool and golf course.

Price: $518 per night

For Advanced Skiers

Seven Springs

Vrbo2

Ideal for couples are small families thanks to its jack-and-jill bathroom, this hotel-style, two-bedroom condo in the Stoneridge community of Seven Springs has direct access to the slopes, among them the Avalanche and Goosebumps slopes, as well as the Corkscrew and Boomerang trails. Shuttle service is available and there are lockers for equipment inside the building.

Price: $250 per night

For a Luxurious Large Gathering

The Laurel Highlands

Vrbo7

Located minutes from Seven Springs and Hidden Valley, the elegant stone-and-timber Sundance at Fern Mountain, located in the Laurel Highlands, has six bedrooms and four full bathrooms, plus a spacious great room with a gas fireplace and large windows overlooking the wooded outdoors. Designed for family gathering and corporate retreats, the cabin, which sleeps up to 12 people, also has a separate media room with surround sound for movie and game nights.

Price: $1,143 per night

For the Ultimate Family-Friendly Experience

Southwind at Seven Springs

Vrbo6

This well-appointed, three-story townhome in Southwind community of Seven Springs was used by the owners for years as their personal family vacation spot. With the family unable to make it this year, the owners have put the four-bedroom townhouse, which sleeps up to 14 guests, on the rental market for the first time. Besides a ski-in/ski-out location on the resort’s Southwind Slope, the townhouse also has an outdoor hot tub. Not a skier? The owners recommend sled riding in the backyard or taking the free Seven Springs shuttle to the resort lodge.

Price: $1,06 per night

Step Inside History

Lincoln Boutique Hotel at Holiday Valley Resort

Vrbo5

One of the area’s oldest roadside motels, the completely refurbished Lincoln Boutique Motel at the edge of the Holiday Valley Resort is located just over the Pennsylvania border in Ellicottville, New York. The upper-level King Room features a vaulted ceiling with the original beams as well as locally sourced lumber and custom-built, live-edge furniture alongside luxurious bedding. It’s also steps away from Pour Taproom, which is opening later this winter.

Price: $252 per night

A Heavenly Experience

Deep Creek Lake

Vrbo12

Winter is a great time to get a group together to spend a weekend at picturesque Deep Creek Lake in Maryland. Located in the North Camp Community, Heaven on Seven is a luxurious seven-bedroom retreat that’s just steps away from Wisp Resort’s Chair 7 and the Ace’s Run slopes. All seven bedrooms are suites with attached bathrooms. There’s also an expansive covered deck and cozy patio with gas fireplaces as well as a private hot tub. In the lower level game room are ping pong, pool and air hockey tables, plus ample ski storage.

Price: $1,245 per night

Slopeside Digs

Wisp Resort

Vrbo3

Adjacent to Wisp Resort in Maryland, the two-bedroom Slope Side retreat offers ski in-/ski out access. Recently updated, the roomy main level and primary suite both have views of the ski slopes. Other amenities include a gas fireplace, a theater room and a hot tub. Being adjacent to Wisp Resort means a lot of opportunities for outdoor recreation are within easy reach, including golf, skiing, snow tubing, ziplines, the mountain coaster and disc golf, depending on the season.

Price: $138 per night

For Outdoor Adventurers

Altitude Adjustment at Snowshoe Mountain Resort

Vrbo1

Nestled in the Appalachian Mountains near West Virginia’s Snowshoe Mountain Resort, Altitude Adjustment is also a great home base for all kinds of outdoor adventures, including exploring New River Gorge National Park, Seneca Rocks and White Sulphur Springs. Watoga State Park in nearby Marlinton also was recently named a Dark Sky Park by the International Dark-Sky Association, meaning it’s one of the best places for some stargazing. The charming three-bedroom log cabin also has a hot tub and an outdoor fire pit that’s perfect for s’mores.

Price: $589 per night

Even though the weather has still been pretty summerlike, fall (as evidenced by all the pumpkin spice-flavored options on every drinks menu) is officially here. And you know what that means — it’s time to decorate for Halloween.

From ghosts to giant spider webs, and everything in between, we’ve rounded up some of the spookiest — and, OK, cutest — outdoor merchandise on the block.

Halloween6

Hey Boo!

Ghost Trio

Make your yard look BOOtiful with this 8-foot-tall inflatable Ghost Trio from Home Depot. Featuring flickering, ShortCircuit black lights, each ghost wears tattered gauze. The self-inflating design also comes with stakes and tethers for an easy setup.

Price: $79.98

Halloweenskeleton

Spooky, Scary Skeletons

Giant Skeleton

No bones about it, the Way To Celebrate Skeleton Decoration from Walmart makes quite a big statement. Standing 10 feet tall, the sturdy skeleton (made from plastic, not bone) comes on a wide base of iron legs and has poseable arms.

Price: $249

Halloween2

On the Web

200-Inch Spider Web + Spider

We wouldn’t want to get caught up in this web. The 200-inch, polyester mega-web comes with a 59-inch-tall (thankfully fake) furry spider with red eyes. Attach the triangular web to your front porch, or above a window, to give trick-or-treaters a real thrill.

Price: $19.99

Halloween3

What a Witch

Hanging Witch Hat Lights

On the cuter end of the Halloween spectrum, these Hanging Witch Hat Lights by Funpeny are simply magical. Accompanied by warm white string lights, the set of eight orange and purple pointy hats are waterproof and have close to a dozen different light flashing modes. The set also comes with a small wireless remote and a timer, so you don’t have to worry about switching them off once the Halloween festivities are over.

Price: $24.99

Halloween4

Eye See You

Colorful Eye Wreath

Keep an eye on your trick-or-treaters with this colorful felt eyeball wreath that somehow manages to straddle the line between adorable and creepy. The festive centerpiece, available at Walmart, has a diameter of 17 inches and would look eye-catching on both the front door or above a fireplace mantel.

While our summer travels have come to an end, I’m still thinking about the hotel sheets.

Throughout June and July, we stayed at a historical boutique hotel in a coastal Maryland town for a family member’s wedding (excellent sheets!) as well as an older chain hotel for a lacrosse tournament (not-so-great sheets). Our big trip of the season was to Disney World in Florida, where like everything else about the “Happiest Place on Earth,” the hotel bedding was pretty magical.

Once we got home, I wanted to replicate some of our better experiences by adding crisp, cool sheets to our primary bedroom. After a lot of research, here’s what I found.

Related: Goldilocks Would Approve of These Just Right Mattresses

Best Percale

Parachute Percale Sheet Set

Crisp, cool and lightweight, percale sheets are similar to what you might find with luxury hotel bedding. One popular pick is Parachute’s premium percale sheet set, which is crafted from long-staple Egyptian cotton, making them ultra durable. Percale sheets, which tend to be more textured than sateen sheets, are also an overall great choice for hot sleepers.

Price: Starting at $259 for a full-sheet set.

Best Sateen

Brooklinen Luxe Sateen Core Sheet Set

Available in plenty of colors and prints, Brooklinen’s best-selling sateen sheets (which I’ve bought in the past for my home) are perfect for those craving a little luxury in their lives. The ultra-smooth sheets use 480-thread-count, long-staple cotton to give them a super-soft feel. I also love that the fitted sheets are labeled on the “long” and “short” sides, which is a big help with bed-making.

Price: Starting at $152.15 for a full-sheet set.

Best Bamboo

Cozy Earth Bamboo Sheets

The Oprah–approved bamboo sheets set from Cozy Earth are made from 100% premium viscose from bamboo. Soft, durable and not prone to wrinkling, the breathable sheets, which have an oversized fit and gentle drape, only grow softer with each wash.

Price: Starting at $251.20 for a full-sheet set.

Best Linen

Quince European Linen Sheet Set

For our newest personal sheets, I ended up going with Quince’s European linen sheet set — and I haven’t been disappointed. Ethically woven from flax, the mid-weight sheets, like most linen, have a lived-in, textured feel that gets softer over time. The breathable Quince sheets also offer a luxury feel, but with a more affordable price tag.

Price: Starting at $159.90 for a full-sheet set.

Best Sheets For Kids

Pottery Barn Kids and Pottery Barn Teen

Since they were toddlers, I’ve gotten sheets from Pottery Barn Kids and Pottery Barn Teen for my daughters (now ages 8 and 10), and they’ve held up beautifully. Besides the quality, one of my favorite things about these 100% organic cotton percale sheets is that they come in so many fun prints and colors. This includes seasonal designs as well as dreamy collaborations with other brands such as LoveShackFancy and Lilly Pulitzer; there’s even trademarked Harry Potter-style sheets.

Price: Starting at $79 for a twin-sheet set.

Heading off to a college dorm for the first time is hard. You’re about to leave the comforts of home, which includes the care of your parents, and prepare yourself to live with strangers in a space that doesn’t include a kitchen, a regulation-size bed or even a private bathroom.

Still, there are ways to make your dorm space feel more like home. From essentials such as a mini-refrigerator and coffee maker (you will want this in college — trust me) to fun aesthetics such as a cozy area rug and ambient fairy lights, these are the items your college students will want (and need) as they make their first home away from home.

The Essentials

Dorm2

The Microwave

Beautiful Sensor Microwave Oven

The aesthetically pleasing microwave comes with a celebrity endorsement. The aptly named Beautiful 1000-Watt Sensor Microwave Oven in White Icing by Drew Barrymore has a minimalist design and a matte gold handle that will add a touch of class to any dorm room. Thoughtfully designed with a touch-activated display, and equipped with 15 convenient pre-set functions, this countertop microwave (available at Wal-Mart) makes mealtime easy — just make sure that your school allows microwaves in dorms first.

Price: $129

Dorm10

The Mattress Topper

Saatva Graphite Memory Foam Mattress Topper

The Twin XL mattresses that often come with dorm rooms are not known for being comfortable, which makes investing in a quality mattress topper a wise choice. With a 3-inch layer of memory foam infused with cooling graphite, Saatva’s eco-friendly Graphite memory foam mattress topper is the ultimate in comfort. Whether it’s for a bunk or a single bed, the topper also is sure to stay put, no matter how much shifting you do, thanks to four elastic anchor bands that ensure a secure fit on the mattress.

Price: $325

Dorm1

The Mini Refrigerator

Frigidaire Compact Fridge

Available at Wal-Mart, Frigidaire’s 3.2 Cubic Foot Retro Dry Erase Compact Fridge is large on space and style. Featuring two adjustable, slideout glass shelves, a door basket with beverage holders and an ice-cube tray, the compact fridge has a reversible door that opens left or right, giving you more options for placement. Also, it’s really cute. Beside the retro stainless steel handle, the front of the fridge is actually a dry erase board, so you can jot down notes, reminders and, of course, a shopping list on it.

Price: $142.14

Dorm11

The Cooling Tower

Dreo Tower Fan

Air conditioning, especially if you’re residing in an older building, is not guaranteed in a dorm. If that’s the case, one of your best bets for cooling off is the highly rated Dreo Tower Fan. The sleek, 36-inch tower has a quiet electric motor that delivers cool, high-speed winds that fan out up to 29 feet in distance. Easy-to-clean and bladeless, the fan also has four wind speeds, plus a convenient remote control.

Price: $69.99

Dorm5

The Space Saver

ULG Over Door Organizer

Dorms, and their closets, are notoriously cramped. Find room for your stuff, and keep it organized, with the ULG Over Door Organizer. Made from durable, non-woven fabric, the organizer has five spacious pockets and two mesh side pockets that you can use to store everything from cosmetics and toiletries to cleaning supplies.

Price: $35.99

Dorm7

The Coffee Maker

K-Express Essentials Single Serve Coffee Maker

Welcome to the adult world — you’re tired all the time now and you need caffeine to get you through the day. Start your day off right with Keurig’s K-Express Essentials Single Serve Coffee Maker. The compact coffee maker, which offers three serving sizes, comes in a variety of colors (I like the bold teal) and makes one easy, mess-free cup of joe.

Price: $49

The Aesthetics

Dorm12

The Area Rug

Bettie Retro Checkered Shag Rug

Warm up your dorm room floor, and add a punch of color, with Rugs USA’s retro shag rug in a fun checked print. Dense and durability, the area rug, which comes in a variety of sizes, is built to withstand high traffic areas. Besides a cozy place to sit, the plush surface also will add a more inviting vibe to a sterile dorm room.

Price: $131.95 for a 5-by-7-foot rug

Dorm8

The Floor Pillow

Ruthie Velvet Floor Pillow

Covered in bold, jewel-toned velvet, these luxe floor pillows, available at Urban Outfitters, are chic enough to double as on-the-floor seating and decor. Stack a few together to create the perfect reading nook.

Price: $49

Dorm4

The Comforter

Retro Daisy Floral Comforter

Add some flower power to your space with Society6’s daisy floral comforter. The lightweight bedding in a warm golden color comes in the standard dorm bed size of Twin XL — and the fun daisy print will have your space blooming.

Price: $105.75 for a Twin XL

Dorm9

The Lighting

LECLSTAR 100 LED String Lights

Fairy lights are an easy, and cheap way, to lend your dorm room some cozy ambiance. Totaling 33 feet in length, LECLSTAR’s 100 LED String Lights also come with transparent clips that you can use for hanging photos or other small items.

Price: $14.88

Dorm6

The Mirror

Otlsh Wavy Floor Mirror

Everyone needs a full-length mirror to check out their outfits, and this one also happens to be exceptionally cute. The arched Otlsh Wavy Floor Mirror, which comes in a variety of colors, will add some mod style to your dorm, while the light reflecting from the mirrored surface will help make the space appear bigger. The versatile mirror can be hung on the wall or freestanding.

These Are the Trendy Back-to-School Items We Love https://www.pittsburghmagazine.com/these-are-the-trendy-back-to-school-items-we-love/ Wed, 14 Aug 2024 15:45:12 +0000 https://www.pittsburghmagazine.com/?p=279937

Parents, the time is upon us. If you haven’t gotten a start on your back-to-school shopping list yet, now is the time. Most students return to the classroom well before Labor Day this year, with Pittsburgh-area kiddos typically heading back by Aug. 22.

Now, while it’s wisest to wait for your child’s teacher to release a supply list before going crazy buying pens, notebooks and folders, we’ve rounded up some of the other essentials — aka the trendy back-to-school items that your student is going to want for the first day of class.

As for why you should take this aging millennial’s advice on what’s cool for school? Just know that all products were pre-approved by my own students, who are entering third and fifth grade this year.

Back to Back

Pottery Barn Kids Backpack

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Pottery Barn Kids (@potterybarnkids)

I started buying my daughters Pottery Barn Kids backpacks back when they were in kindergarten — and those things are absolute beasts. While my younger daughter has cast off her still perfectly serviceable PB bag in favor of a trendy North Face backpack as she heads to middle school, my younger daughter has been carrying the same durable Pottery Barn backpack for years, with little sign of wear and tear. Available in a variety of colors and patterns, the backpacks also have a plethora of sizing that ranges from “Mini” to “X-Large.” There’s also an adaptive option for those in wheelchairs. Often on sale, the bags are crafted with water-resistant polyester that’s made from recycled plastic bottles and are equipped with comfy, adjustable and padded shoulder straps.

Price: $39 to $47, depending on size

Just Chill

Bentgo Kids Chill Lunch Box

School1

For students who prefer to pack instead of eating the school lunch, the Bentgo® Kids Chill Leak-Proof Lunch Box is a great option, especially for younger kids who tend to get messy. Made from eco-friendly, BPA-free material, the lightweight lunchbox, which is divided into segments, comes with a removable ice pack. Rubber-coated edges also prevent the dishwasher-safe trays from leaking.

Price: $29.99

Bottle It Up

Stanley IceFlow Tumbler

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Stanley 1913 (@stanley_brand)

For tweens, there is no greater accessory than the reusable, stainless-steel Stanley water bottle. I’m not immune to the charms of a trendy Stanley myself (it does a great job keeping my drinks cold), but for my girls, I eschewed the traditional Quencher-style tumbler with a straw, which has tendency to spill when it gets knocked over, in favor of the brand’s flip straw IceFlow tumbler, which, thanks to its foldable straw, is leakproof and easily fits into a backpack or car cup holder. I especially love Stanley’s retro Varsity collection, which screams back-to-school cool.

Price: $35

Perfect Pouch

Standing Pencil Case

School3

My boba-loving 10-year-old went gaga for this adorable milk tea-inspired pencil pouch for her various pens, highlighters and other accessories. Made from sturdy canvas material, the standing pouch, which zips to open and close, will easily fit into a desk or backpack.

Price: $8.37

Head to Head

JLab JBuddies Headphones

School4

Headphones are a necessity for today’s students, who are often learning and working on their computers at school. I just got these foldable JLab JBuddies Studio over-the-ear headphones for my girls, who prefer the comfy, cushioned ear pieces over ear buds. Although wireless versions are available, my 8- and 10-year-old  favor the old-fashioned cord instead of messing around with Bluetooth while in class. The JBuddies also offer safe-volume control, with built-in volume regulators to ensure kids never rock out past 85db.

Price: $14.88

The Write Stuff

Yoobi Composition Notebook

School2

Composition notebooks also often are a classroom requirement as students head into middle school, but they don’t have to be boring. My incoming fifth-grader fell in love with these fun Yoobi notebooks, which come in a set of three. Each notebook contains 100 college-ruled white sheets for schoolwork or journaling. For each product purchased, Yoobi will also donate a school item to students in need thanks to its partnership with the Kids In Need Foundation.

Price: $13.49

Five Accessories That Will Keep You Cool in the Dog Days of Summer https://www.pittsburghmagazine.com/five-summer-accessories-that-will-keep-you-cool/ Tue, 30 Jul 2024 14:21:04 +0000 https://www.pittsburghmagazine.com/?p=274420
Dogdays

If you haven’t noticed, we’re currently in the dog days of summer, that extra-hot, extra-sticky period of time between July and August where even stepping outside for just a few minutes feels like entering an unwelcome sauna.

Still, persist we must, and if you’re spending any time outdoors in the next few months, whether it be a last-minute vacation before the start of school, or (like me) sitting in the sun for your children’s sporting events, these are the accessories you that will keep you feeling — and looking — cool in the sweltering outdoors.

Cool1

Biggest Fan
I don’t think I would have made it through our recent visit to Disney World (which we did in mid-July, so you know it was hot) without one of these JISULIFE portable neck fans. The bestselling, lightweight accessory, which has more than 52,000 positive reviews on Amazon, is battery operated, rechargeable and bladeless, making it safe for children, and those of us with long hair, to wear around the neck.
Price: $31.99. Buy Here

Cool3

Cool Off
Another must-have accessory for the summer (and, really, any warm-weather activity) is a cooling towel. I personally have these Sukeen microfiber cooling towels, which come in a variety of colors; the set of four towels also each have their own clear carrying pouch. To activate, simply soak the towel in cold water, wring it out, place it on your body, and, voila, instant cooling system. The lightweight towels, which draw sweat away from your skin, also stay chilled for up to three hours, depending on weather conditions.
Price: $19.99. Buy Here

A post shared by QUAY (@quayaustralia)

Eye Candy
I absolutely love Quay Australia sunglasses, which are high-quality while being reasonably priced. I invest in new styles every few years, often taking advantage of Quay’s buy one, get one sales that take place throughout the seasons. One of my favorite styles is the “All In,” a classic aviator-shaped sunny with metal arms. For those with sensitive eyes like me, I highly recommend getting polarized lenses.
Price: $75 for standard lenses. $95 for polarized lenses. Buy Here

Cool4

Hats Off
Admittedly, the straw Hemlock hat looks a little dorky, but hear me out. My neighbor, who recently moved back to the Pittsburgh area after years of living in Florida, highly recommended the unisex lifeguard hat, which he says all the locals in the know wear throughout the year. My husband got one before our vacation and it kept him cool and sunburn free during the 20,000 steps we walked each day in Disney. The durable hat, which has certified UPF 50+ sun protection, also comes in a variety of fun colors and patterns, although my husband opted for the plain version.
Price: $45. Buy Here

Dress it Up
Perhaps the ultimate summer athleisure wear, the original Outdoor Voices exercise dress, which is billed as being “designed for doing anything,” is sporty and flattering while being extremely functional. Made from breathable, sweat-wicking material, the versatile piece, which can be dressed up or down, features adjustable straps and has a built-in shorts liner with side pockets.

Goldilocks was onto something when she tested out the beds of the three bears in search of one that felt just right. Finding the correct mattress for your individual needs — such as sleeping position, weight or body pain — can be a make it or break point in getting a restful night’s sleep.

Fortunately, there are a lot of mattress options out there; unfortunately, that can also lead to a lot of confusion over which product is the right one for you. Here, we’ve rounded up some of the best mattress options for a variety of different sleepers — so you can have a good night.

The Hybrid Mattress

Saatva’s Classic Mattress

The Memory Foam Mattress

Leesa’s Original Mattress

Declared a “Best Memory Foam Mattress” winner by Wirecutter, Leesa’s crowd-pleasing Original Mattress was made to cradle and support your body while avoiding the sinking and overheating feeling that can be found in some memory foam mattresses. While the durable base foam provides long-lasting support for all body types and sleep positions, there’s also a deeper memory foam recovery layer for extra pressure relief. The aerated foam also has a breathable knit cover, helping to facilitate airflow while you dream.

Price: $999 for a queen.

The Budget Mattress

Zinus’ Original Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress

For those who want the comfort of a luxury mattress, but don’t want to shell out all that cash, the Original Green Tea Memory Foam Mattress by Zinus is a great budget option. Infused with green tea — which the company claims keeps your mattress fresh — as well as ActivCharcoal microparticles that block moisture, the mattress’s memory foam cradles your body to alleviate pressure and has a soft, breathable cover.

Price: $499 for a queen.

The Mattress in a Box

DreamCloud’s Hybrid Mattress

Delivered to your home in a box, DreamCloud’s award-winning Hybrid Mattress unfurls into a supportive hybrid mattress that is comfortable for most sleepers, no matter their position. We’ve all seen the inspirational photos on social media of aesthetically pleasing white dishes and bowls stacked neatly on open kitchen shelves. But real life is a lot messier, and often shoved behind closed cabinet doors.

So what’s the key to combating the clutter and creating a sleeker kitchen similar to those online? Getting organized.

While these items may not help you attain home-influencer levels of pristine perfection (and that’s not real anyway!), they will help get you sorted and, in the process, make your kitchen a more pleasant — and more practical — place to break bread.

(We independently review everything we recommend. When you buy through our links, we may earn a commission.)

In this world, there are two types of packers: Those who haphazardly throw everything into their suitcase the night before they leave for vacation — and those who meticulously prepare days in advance of their departure, including neatly stacking their must-have items into packing cubes

And then they marry each other, am I right?

Whether you’re the former or the latter (and I’m not saying which one I am), here are our essential Amazon travel accessories that will smooth the way to your next adventure.

Air It Out
If you’ve never had to deal with lost luggage at the airport, consider yourself lucky. And if your luck does run out, and your suitcases remain at the beach while you wing it back to Pittsburgh, you can at least track your luggage with Apple AirTags. A simple, one-tap setup instantly connects AirTag with your iPhone or iPad. I like this set of four, which ensures you have enough tags for any erstwhile items.

Pack it In
Make packing a breeze with these durable, lightweight packing cubes. Aside from the standard cubes, this set of eight includes a cosmetics case, a laundry bag, an underwear cube and a shoe compartment. In addition to saving suitcase space, the cubes’ mesh-top panel makes it easy for you to identify your items. Plus, the set comes in a variety of cute colors and patterns (I’m partial to the pink leopard print).

Neck and Neck
Yes, the trtl Travel and Airplane Pillow looks like a weird neck brace; let’s just get that out of the way. But experienced travelers love it for its unmatched neck and shoulder support. The pillow’s patented design keeps your head and neck in an upright position while you nap — preventing you from waking up with aches, strains or pains. Lightweight and compact, the pillow also is outfitted with soft fleece and plush cushioning.

Lead the Charge
When in unfamiliar territory (or heck, any territory), the last thing you want is a dying cell phone. Prevent that with a portable charger. Slim and lightweight, the battery-powered Anker charger, which has more than 100,000 positive ratings, is compatible with iPhones, Androids and other USB-charged devices. “With this portable charger in my backpack, I can bid farewell to the anxiety of running out of battery power at the most inconvenient moments,” wrote one five-star reviewer.

Fan Club
I’m a fan of the mini-fans I bought for my two elementary-age daughters, who often cheer at football games in 90-degree heat in August. This handheld, rechargeable fan is also a cool companion at concerts, camping — and walking through the hot, packed pathways of Disney World. If you know, you know. Bonus, the fan also has a built-in flashlight.

If the dad figure in your life says he wants nothing this year for Father’s Day, don’t believe him.

Even the dads who protest (I know, because I’m married to one) like to be recognized on their special day. If you’re still scrambling to find the right gift for your Pittsburgh Dad, we’ve got you covered with our black-and-gold Father’s Day Gift Guide.

Brew Through
For dads who are also local craft beer enthusiasts, look no further than the Pittsburgh Signature Guided Brewery Tour. Taking place on Saturdays, including Father’s Day weekend, tour participants sample up to 12 beers on a 3½-hour group tour of several Pittsburgh breweries. Round-trip transportation will take your group from the meetup point at Downtown’s Hampton Inn & Suites to the first bar. Participants also may choose from two start times, as well as enjoy complimentary pretzel snacks with their beer pairings while learning about the beer-making process.

Dads of Steel
How many times have you heard the father figure in your life say “I yell because I care?” It can’t be just me. This year, show Dad how much you care with Steel City’s “I Yell Because I Care” T-shirt. Pre-shrunk and made of soft cotton, this is a comfy (and humorous) choice that he’ll wear all year long. Bonus: you’re supporting a local business.
Price: $36. Buy Here

Chillomatic

Chill Out
Dad will be the coolest guy at the Steelers tailgate party with one of these babies. Ditch the heavy cooler filled with ice in favor of the Chill-O-Matic. The instant beverage cooler chills any 12-ounce can of soda or beer in 60 seconds. The portable, battery-powered device also won’t cause the liquid to fizz, foam or explode.

Any Given Sundae
Treat dad to some of Pittsburgh’s best homemade ice cream on his special sundae, er Sunday. Millie’s Sundae Party Box includes three pints of your choice of ice cream (I’m partial to the Backyard S’mores), six toppings, six scratch-made waffle cones and compostable servingware. Add-ons include mini marshmallows and rainbow-colored sprinkles.

Cheers to History
In a knockout combo for dads who are into history and locally distilled spirits, the Wigle Whiskey Rebellion Distillery Tour offers an evening of sipping and stories. Taking place every Saturday at the award-winning distillery’s location in the Strip District, the guided tour shows how spirits such as whiskey, gin and rum are made — while the participants sip on them. Tourists will also hear the history of Western Pennsylvania’s bloody Whiskey Rebellion, when distillers in the 1790s rebelled against the new federal government’s whiskey tax. Guests are welcome to stay after their tour or join before for a meal at the distillery’s restaurant.

Can you hear that? It’s the sound of summer in the air — and it’s calling to you.

Now that the kids are out of school, it’s time to venture to the beach or even just to the community pool. Of course, you can’t go to either without packing up a plethora of supplies, because heavens forbid you forget your little one’s favorite water toy — or, more importantly, their sunscreen.

With that in mind, we’ve broken down the Amazon essentials you’ll want to bag up before you hit the water this summer.

Beachbogg

In the Bag
This one is a mom must: Waterproof, washable and spacious, the Bogg Bag is tip-proof, meaning it stands upright even when it’s fully loaded with items. The sturdy tote, which comes in a variety of colors, also features a treaded, non-slip bottom and inside zipper pockets. Load it up with snacks, sunblock, books and all your other beach supplies without worry of them spilling out into the sand.
Price: $90. Buy Here

Beachtowel

The Not Terrible Towel
As durable as it is adorable, the super-absorbent Dock & Bay beach towel is made from recycled material that dries three times faster than traditional cotton towels. The microfiber material also repels sand; all you need to do is give the towel a quick shake and the minuscule grains fall right off. Although the towel, which was first seen on the BBC’s entrepreneurial reality TV series Dragons’ Den, comes in numerous patterns and colors, I’m partial to the pink-and-white striped cabana version.

Screen Time
One of the most important things you can put on your skin is sunscreen. Not only does applying it prevent you from getting a painful sunburn, it can help avert skin cancer, premature aging and discoloration. Although wearing any sunscreen is good, we rounded up some of the best products on the market.
Visit here for more.

Beach Chair

Take a Seat
I own this foldable backpack beach chair from Tommy Bahama and it’s a clutch find for the beach. The five-position chair features a back bar that allows you to hang beach towels, plus a side mesh pouch that can be used for storing your keys, phone and wallet. The comfortable chair also has an insulated cooler that can hold six to eight cans and an insulated cup holder.
Price: $71.69. Buy Here

Beachcabana

Gimme Shelter
Take a break from the rays with this portable beach cabana that comes in a fun striped pattern. Made of waterproof material, the 6-foot-wide beach shelter comes with a removable wall for extra protection from the sun, as well as storage pockets on each inside corner of the cabana. Along with a carry bag, the cabana includes four stakes as well as built-in sandbags for an easy setup.
Price: $84.99. Buy Here

Beachtoys

Play Time
You can’t go to the beach without at least a few toys for the kiddos. This colorful, 18-piece beach toy set from Click N’ Play includes a sand bucket with a sifter, shovels, rakes and a watering can, plus cute sand molds shaped like a turtle, sea horse, octopus, shell and, of course, a castle. The set also comes with a mesh storage backpack for convenient, portable storage.

Look, I don’t know who needs to hear this, but we’re never going back to wearing real pants. To quote Taylor Swift, “like ever.”

Since the start of the pandemic, when most began working remotely — and still might — people have been eschewing tailored, uncomfortable bottoms in favor of athleisure gear that can take you from the gym to running errands to the (home) office.

Brands have responded with luxury sportswear that costs just as much as those designer jeans you never wear any more but are way more cozy. Lucky for us, there are a ton of affordable, and still high-quality, items on Amazon. Here are the leggings, athletic dresses and tops we love for our (ongoing) athleisure era.

(We independently review everything we recommend. When you buy through our links, we may earn a commission.)

Athpants

A Leg Up
I have these buttery soft CRZ Yoga leggings in several colors and they feel every bit as nice as my Lululemons, but at a quarter of the price. The sweat-wicking material also gently compresses, giving you a flattering fit while still being cool and comfy. The pants also come with a seamless waist and side pockets, which are excellent for storing a cell phone when you’re on the run.
Price: $28.Buy Here

Athshorts

Short and Sweet
Also in my closet, these Blooming Jelly running shorts with an elastic waistband and zipper pocket are soft, stretchy and made with a quick-drying, breathable fabric. I love that the shorts come with a built-in underwear liner for an extra layer of coverage, making sure there are no cheeky mishaps while you’re working out. Fair warning, I do recommend sizing up in these shorts.
Price: $24.99. Buy Here

Athskort

Go with the Flow
For the active tween or teen in your life, these flowy butterfly shorts are a wardrobe staple for my 8- and 10-year-old daughters, who are both avid tumblers. The fluttery bottoms, which come in a ton of colors, resemble a skirt, but there are built-in spandex shorts underneath and a comfortable elastic waist with a drawstring. People ask my girls where they got these skorts every time they wear them.
Price:$24.98. Buy Here

Athyellow

Ready to Court
For an elevated look that’s still effortless and comfortable, consider an A-line tennis dress. An Amazon bestseller, this
flattering athletic dress is made with moisture-wicking material and has built-in shorts as well as a bra with removable padding. Adjustable straps help give the dress a more customized fit.
Price: $37.99. Buy Here

Athjogger

Jog On
Part sweatpant, part legging, all comfort, joggers straddle the line between lounge wear and workout gear. These highly reviewed, lightweight joggers from The Gym People have a flattering, tapered leg and a wide waistband that lays flat against the skin.
Price: $29.99. Buy Here

Athpullover

Work It Out
Another Lululemon dupe, this half-zip, cropped pullover sweatshirt with a relaxed fit gets high praise for its warm fleece lining and heavy material. It also comes with a deep kangaroo pocket and thumbholes to help keep the sleeves in place.

Let’s all take a minute to recognize educators.

They teach our kids how to read and write, answer their many questions (and those of their parents), are constantly exposed to their germs and sticky fingers — and generally just love on them when us parents aren’t there.

With the end of the school year quickly approaching, it’s time to show our teachers how much we appreciate them before their (very) well-earned summer break.

When it comes to tokens of appreciation, gift cards are definitely the gold standard; after all, there’s only so many mugs and candles teachers can use. I consulted with my own kids’ instructors and found educators also really appreciate a thoughtful handwritten note of thanks or a homemade gift from their students.

Other popular items were candy, self-care items, flowers, door decorations and other items for the classroom (remember, teachers often buy their own supplies). My daughter’s fourth-grade teacher even mentioned he has been given alcohol before, although he was quick to point out he passed that gift on to other friends or family members.

Through a lot of research, plus taking teacher opinions into account, these are some of the best practical and personal items that are sure to be a hit with the hard-working educators in your life.

For the Classroom

Sign of the Times: Teachers are always striving to brighten up their classrooms and make it feel more like home; this cheerful wooden door sign (available in a variety of education-themed designs and colors) adds a personalized punch of charm.

Stamp It: Based on the amount of paper my daughters bring home each day, educators spend a lot of time adding stars and checks to worksheets. Make it easier (and more fun) for them with these brightly colored, refillable stamps with affirming messages such as “You Are Out of This World” and “Keep Going.”

Love for Laminate: A teacher friend of mine mentioned instructors are forever laminating things in the classroom. This well-reviewed mini laminator, which is great for personal use, heats up almost as quickly as it laminates papers.
$35.99. Buy Here

Pottedplants

Grow On: Did you know studies have shown having plants around can help reduce stress as well as increase feelings of productivity and well being? With that in mind, do everyone a favor by adding these adorable mini-succulent pots, which come in on-trend, geometric designs, to your teacher’s classroom. Add some low-maintenance, easy-to-care-for succulents to the containers before you present them.
$18.99 for a set of six pots. Buy Here

Snack Attack: Sometimes teachers only have enough time to grab a quick snack on their breaks, which makes these CRAVEBOX Healthy Snack Boxes the perfect gift for hungry instructors on the go. The 35-count care package is filled with a brand-name mix of sweet and savory snacks such as granola bars, veggie straws and popcorn.

For the Teachers

Warm Wishes: Unless the weather is below freezing, teachers are taking their students outside for recess to burn off some energy. This nifty rechargeable hand warmer, which easily fits inside a pocket, will help keep them toasty in Pittsburgh’s often cool, cloudy conditions.

Hand in Hand: All the hand scrubbing teachers do after projects (and, let’s be honest, to avoid germs) can lead to red, raw hands. Beloved by Oprah, luxurious La Chatelaine Hand Creams use organic Shea Butter, Vitamin E and Argan Oil to deeply moisturize and protect skin — and they smell really, really good.
$29 for a set of three. Buy Here

Giftsanitizer

Keep it Clean: Teachers also go through a lot of hand sanitizer, but it doesn’t have to be the drying, alcohol-scented solution of yore. Not only does Touchland Power Mist Hydrating Hand Sanitizer Sprays (which is a big hit on the tween scene) come in refreshing scents such as Frosted Mint, Citrus Grove and Lemon Lime Spritz, it contains moisturizing ingredients such as aloe vera that leave the hands smooth, smelling good and — most importantly — clean.
$30 for a pack of three. Buy Here

Lip Service: This is another one for teachers suffering from chapped lips (and dry skin) from being in outdoor conditions. A viral sensation, the luxury Laneige lip mask is lauded for its moisturizing abilities. This gift set includes the popular lip treatment, as well as two other sleeping masks sure to give your student’s teacher a restful appearance — even if they were up all night grading papers.
$24. Buy Here

Gift Card: Here it is — the gift of choice. Let the teachers treat themselves to pretty much anything with an Amazon gift card; I particularly love this one, which comes in an aesthetically pleasing gift box. Pair it with a heartfelt note from your student that lets their teachers know just how much of an impact they’ve had on their lives.
